I visited Moalboal in the western part of Cebu Island to see the famous massive school of sardines known as the “sardine run.”
As soon as you enter the water, countless sardines form a huge school and swim together, shifting shapes as if they were a single, giant living creature. It is truly breathtaking to see the entire school instantly change its shape to avoid people as they approach. While it is unfortunate that a video cannot fully capture the scale and impact felt on-site, seeing it firsthand in the ocean was an incredibly memorable sight.
I enjoyed this experience through snorkeling, but for those who scuba dive, viewing the school of sardines from deeper waters would likely offer a completely different and unique perspective. You can also encounter sea turtles nearby, allowing you to experience the rich marine life of Moalboal up close.
On this trip, I joined a one-day tour that combined Moalboal with the Oslob whale shark swim, which I introduce in another video. Traveling long distances from early morning and entering the ocean required a good amount of physical stamina, but being able to experience two completely different marine spectacles—whale sharks and a massive school of sardines—in a single day became a truly wonderful memory.
If you have the physical energy and time in your schedule, I highly recommend considering this as a perfect way to fully enjoy the unique ocean experiences that Cebu has to offer.
